Reflections: In Memory of Dr. Steadman

Written by Karen Brewer, Publisher

A service was held today to celebrate the life of one of my very favorite English professors from my time as a student at Clemson University, Dr. Steadman.

I respected and thought highly of all of my English professors. As someone who has loved reading and writing from a very early age, I was ‘in heaven’, so to speak, when I entered Clemson as a teenaged English major, having the opportunity to learn from those who not only taught literature, but wrote it, as well. Nearly all of my English professors were nearing retirement when I was a student, so they were experienced and had a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to share, and I was eager to listen and learn.

Dr. Steadman was a popular professor among the students. He was such a good professor that, once you had taken one of his classes, you would want to take other classes he taught. He had taught at Clemson for several decades before I was a student, so he influenced several generations of students. I will always remember him for his sense of humor, his kindness, and his encouraging way.

Today’s service, which included memories shared by his sons, grandchildren, friends, and colleagues, was a great tribute to Dr. Steadman, and I loved seeing all of the photos that were shared on the video, from his youth through recent years, especially the photos of him with his family.

Keeping his sweet family, his wife and their sons and their families, in my thoughts and prayers.
