Reflections: In Memory of Alvin Dark On His Birthday

January 7 would have been the 99th birthday of Alvin Dark, who passed away in November of 2014 at the age of 92. He is gone, but he will never be forgotten. Remembering a great man and longtime Christian friend who is missed.

I first interviewed Alvin in 2001, when The Pickens Sentinel’s then General Manager, the late Don Hunt, asked me to write a story on Alvin, as Alvin was going to participate in a golf tournament for the Pickens Chamber of Commerce, and he was called ‘the pro to beat.’ Although I did ask him about and did write about his baseball career for the story, I concentrated on his Christian faith. I had just started going to church that year and wanted to write Christian-oriented stories, so, when I interviewed Alvin, and wrote the story about the golf tournament and Alvin’s background in baseball, I also shared about his Christian faith, and that became the focus of my story. I would also interview him at later times, as well.

Alvin told me that his “most important thing in life” was to share God’s Word. Whenever he spoke to groups who wanted to hear his baseball stories, he would share his testimony and scripture and how God had changed his life.

I treasure these words he wrote, along with a verse of scripture, in a Bible of mine in 2004: “Thanks, Karen, for your friendship. Your friend Al Dark.”

Another treasure was for my nephew, a baseball player for many years (on his school team, American Legion team, and traveling ball teams). I never asked Alvin to sign a baseball for myself, but I did ask if he would sign a baseball for my nephew for my nephew’s high school graduation in 2013, and Alvin was kind to do so. He was always such a kind gentleman.

It’s hard to believe that Alvin has been gone for six years and that I won’t see him at church anymore. (He became a fellow church member in 2005, and I would speak to him every week.) I may not see him at church again, but I look forward to seeing him again one day in heaven.
