Gary Hiott

Gary Hiott

The late Gary Hiott, Jr. was a big supporter of Pickens High School football. His father, then Editor of The Pickens Sentinel, had been the person who gave the team its name, the Blue Flame, in the late 1920's. When Gary himself was Editor of The Sentinel, from 1950 to 1978, he walked the sidelines, covering the Blue Flame football games for the hometown newspaper. After the Hiott family sold The Sentinel, Gary continued to support his team. He would never miss a home game for 55 years. For 23 years, he had sat in the same reserved seat, and, in 2001, when new home stands were built, his alma mater gave him the concrete bench that he and his family had made their home on Friday nights. The Christian View magazine interviews the family of Gary Hiott (about their love and admiration for and special memories of their loved one) and also utilizes the author's previous interview with Gary Hiott, from back in 2001, when she was Editor of The Sentinel, as he shared his memories of Pickens football.
