The Fort Prince George Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held a special ceremony to pay tribute to Vietnam-era veterans, in recognition for their service to our country, and Gold Star Mothers of Vietnam-era veterans. The Fort Prince George Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) honored Beulah Smith, age 92, of Liberty, whose son, 'Jim', died in Vietnam in 1969, seven weeks before his 20th birthday.

                                Honoring their Service Ride

The opening ceremony for the Honoring Their Service Ride was held at the J.B. 'Red' Owens Recreation Complex in Easley on June 19, 2017. From there, combat veterans from the Marine Special Operations Command and members of the Wounded Warriors Regiment and their escorts, including the Marine Corps League, drove by Rock Springs Baptist Church and turned on Highway 123 and then through Main Street in downtown Easley, through Liberty, Norris, Central, Clemson, and Seneca to their destination at Keowee Key. Along the way, they were greeted by local citizens showing their support for our veterans.                              Celebrating His 100th Birthday


The Christian View magazine was present for Clemson University's August 11, 2017 celebration of the 100th birthday of U.S. Army Colonel Ben Skardon, Class of 1938 and Professor Emeritus. Vietnam Moving Wall Moves Visitors to Reflection and Tears

The Moving Wall visited Oconee County for Veterans Day week, 2017 and was on display at the Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative office in Westminster. On the first day of its display, Thursday, November 9, The Christian View magazine interviewed Assistant Director of Oconee County Veterans Affairs Janice Matheson Holbrooks, Director of Oconee County Veterans Affairs Jerry Dyar, Paul and Kim Chen, who have been driving the Wall to sites across the country; and veterans and veterans' family members who visited the Wall.   Opening Ceremony for Moving Wall Draws a Large Crowd

On Friday, November 10, 2017, The Christian View magazine attended Oconee County's official opening ceremony for the visit of the Moving Wall. Oconee County Veterans Affairs Director Jerry Dyar served as Master of Ceremonies for the event, and other speakers included Amy Childress from Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, and U.S. Congressman Jeff Duncan. Veteran Truman Holbrooks gave the invocation, and veteran Del Williams led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Don Bickers read aloud the names of the 21 men from Oconee County who died in Vietnam while Harvey Spencer sounded the toll of the bell for each name. Jon Busch played "Taps." Members of the Walhalla High School JROTC participated in the event, including with the Prisoner of War/Mis
sing in Action ceremony. Wreaths were placed by representatives from all of Oconee County's veterans organizations. American Pride, a Statler Brothers tribute band, sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "More Than a Name on a Wall." Veteran Tom Carroll gave the benediction. magazine attended the Sunday, November 12, 2017 closing ceremony for the Vietnam Moving Wall's visit to Oconee County. Oconee County Veterans Affairs Director Jerry Dyar served as Master of Ceremonies, and speakers included Denise McCormick of Blue Ridge Electric Cooperative, Oconee County Assistant Veterans Affairs Director Janice Holbrooks, and State Senator Thomas Alexander from Oconee County. Dyar delivered the invocation. Veteran Frank Kuhn read aloud the names of the 21 men from Oconee County who died in Vietnam while veteran Harvey Spencer sounded the toll of the bell for each name. Jon Busch played "Taps." Wreaths were retrieved from each of Oconee County's veterans service organizations.
